The American Express Membership Rewards program has a plethora of alternatives for redeeming your points and using your credit card incentives, making it an excellent choice for those who value flexibility in their rewards.
However, not all means of atonement are created equal. The best use of your Membership Rewards points is for flights, with a few exceptions. To go the distance, you might want to consider transferring your points to one of American Express's travel partners. You can receive 2 cents or more for each point by strategically redeeming your issues.
American Express Travel has you covered if you're looking to book a hotel, holiday package, or cruise. Other than airfare, American Express cardholders receive 0.7 cents per point when using the American Express Travel gateway to book vacations. Due to this, redeeming American Express points for this choice is not particularly appealing.
Like most other travel services, American Express Travel allows you to search for flights across many airlines and multiple dates. The minimum amount of points required to redeem for a flight is 5,000. When redeemed for a flight, one point is equivalent to one penny.
When you book a flight with American Express Travel, the airline will see your reservation as a cash purchase, and your frequent flyer points and elite status will be credited to your account.
Transfer redemptions may be found that are worth twice or even three times the value you obtain through the travel portal if you're prepared to put in the time and research. The same holds if you plan on booking a flight in the airline's business class for a special occasion.
The value you may obtain by exchanging points for this is exceptional. The point value varies widely between applications. When transferring points to a U.S.-based airline or hotel chain, American Express levies an excise tax of 0.06 cents per point. This excise tax may seem insignificant, but it significantly impacts your worth.
Only three of Amex's travel partners are hotels, and they aren't quite as lucrative as the top airline transfer alternatives. However, those three happen to be Hilton, Choice, and Marriott, all large chains with thousands of hotels worldwide.
However, suppose you're already a regular client of one of these hotel chains and only require a few thousand points for your next free stay. In that case, it may still be worthwhile to transfer your Amex points to these hotel partners, as the value of points decreases below 1 cent for all the hotel brands.
You may trade in your points for merchandise, dining, and travel certificates at American Express. As with Membership Rewards, gift cards are a good choice for cashing in points. Typically, you can expect to receive 1 cent per point when redeemed for a gift card. However, be wary of gift cards with less than the advertised value.
Purchases of American Express brand gift cards cost only 0.5 cents each point. Amex points may also be used for credit card account statement credits. Statement credits are a terrible redemption option because each moment only costs 0.6 cents.
You may quickly redeem your American Express points at various retailers by linking your account to their websites, such as Amazon, Walmart, Grubhub, and Best Buy. And at any shop that takes PayPal, you may also utilize your Membership Rewards points.
While handy, these choices are not a good use of points because you only earn 0.7 cents back for each issue. However, if you don't have any trips scheduled for the near future, this may be a good choice for you.
Unfortunately, the value of your points drops even further when you use the American Express purchasing platform. Although a lot of stuff is available through the portal, your prizes are only worth half a penny each. One of American Express's retail partners is your best choice if you're set on making purchases online using your Membership Rewards points.
When using American Express, you must know how to maximize your points. The convenience of using them for things like gift cards or shopping partners like Amazon outweighs the little value they deliver.
Travel through Amex Travel or transferring points to a partner airline or hotel is where most consumers will get the most return on their points investment. Which one is best for you will depend on your preferred kind of vacation and your level of physical exertion.
It would help if you took the time to weigh the pros and cons of paying with cash through Amex Travel vs. transferring points to a partner.
